FoodScription is grounded on Three Clinically Proven Areas
Studies have shown that structured meal planning can double the efficacy of standard weight loss programs
Traditional meal tracking is hard...but taking pictures of your meal is easy. Tracking your meals by taking pictures has shown long-term weight loss and improved engagement in programs compared to traditional approaches
Most providers advise balanced eating vs strict calorie counting methods. Science also proves that balanced eating has long-term benefits over short term calorie counting methods
Our diet is a primary driver of chronic disease and poor health. Both providers and participants in the healthcare system need a personalized nutrition solution that helps them be more effective on the journey to improving diet for better health.
Generic disease state specific meal plans don’t meet patient needs, but creating personalized meal plans is too time consuming. In addition, time spent doing diet recalls and gathering other information from patients could be better spent educating and developing solutions. Current tools, like your EHR, are not addressing these challenges.
Calorie counting is hard to sustain over time and can cause anxiety with food. Recipe-based meal plans are too rigid and constraining to be practical. Apps need to be flexible to accommodate complexities in the day in the life of people and how they eat.
A six-month behavioral treatment program (SBT – 26 weekly sessions) with participants randomly assigned to four groups. Compared to the group receiving SBT the study shows that “giving meal plans and grocery lists was sufficient to increase initial weight loss by 50% at 6 months and by >100% 1 year later.” The study also showed that adding food provision to meal planning and grocery lists did not result in additional weight loss. Structured meal planning was associated with improving the quality of food stored in a participant’s home, improving their eating patterns, improved knowledge of the energy content of common foods along with improved decision making, and promoted adherence to a prescribed diet by simplifying the task of following the diet.
Meal Tracking using Food Photos
with our Food AI Assist to help you track food easier
It has been well documented that tracking dietary intake is a key to enhancing weight loss. Mobile apps to help track food have been popular for many years, making tracking more convenient but not painless. Recent developments in image recognition can be applied to identify food and track food intake from photos taken of a meal. One study looked at the effectiveness of this approach for adults who were overweight or obese. Compared to standard tracking, tracking by using the smartphones photo feature showed greater weight loss, tracked for a longer period of time, and logged more days when compared to smartphone tracking without the photo feature.
